Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question? We've got answers. If you have some other questions, contact us using email.

With Systems 17, you can see the nonprofit you donate to in a greater context. You can see what is happening in your community or in a certain impact area like climate action or the arts, overall. You can get all of your updates and see how awesome you and the nonprofit you support is, in the context of everything else going on. No need to check your emails or throw away mail solicitations. You won't get spammed and can interact with your favorite nonprofits and community leaders here. By working with the Open Collective Foundation, our fiscal sponsor, we are extremely transparent about where our funds are going and how they are being used. The way donations usually work: 1) You know about or find an organization to donate to, either because you like them or know something about the impact they are making (or both) 2) You make your donation and maybe get updates about what that specific nonprofit is doing (and requests for more money) via email or mail 3) You remember fondly every now and again that you're doing something cool and you don't really know where the money is going (unless you like reading very long financial reports)

Any nonprofit that is community-led and local to the San Francisco Bay Area can be shown on Systems 17. Until now, there was no central place to find these organizations, and they could be very difficult to find. Other than that, our requirements are that they be either a 501(c)(3) type nonprofit or fiscally sponsored by another 501(c)(3), and that their mission provides a benefit to the people, animals or nature of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The nonprofits in our Impact Funds support the featured projects which were submitted by 501(c)(3) grassroots nonprofits in the San Francisco Bay Area. Information on each project can be found on "find projects" or in the issue area.

Any community-led nonprofit can be featured on Systems 17. Currently we are only launched in the San Francisco Bay Area, but if you are a community-led nonprofit making a difference in your community elsewhere, we invite you to add a project or send us an email at impact@systems17.com expressing your interest. Projects for 2021 are closed but we will reopen for submittal in 2022.

Yes, your donation is 100% deductible. You should automatically be issued a receipt, but if there is an issue in this regard, please contact our support team at impact@systems17.com

Systems 17 has partnered with Open Collective, a 501(c)3 public charity (EIN 81-4004928), to facilitate donations. Open Collective is a fiscal sponsor that is both open-source and extremely transparent. You can go to Systems 17's Open Collective account at https://opencollective.com/systems-17 to see what money is going where. Instead of throwing your money in a black box and hoping for the best, Open Collective has full transparency, so everyone can see where the money comes from and where it goes.

Systems 17 doesn't store any credit card number, we're instead relying on our partner Stripe - a secure solution that is widely used by companies and organizations worldwide. If our systems are compromised, we can't lose your credit card number because we simply don't have it. You can learn more about Stripe's security here: https://stripe.com/docs/security/stripe

The easiest and quickest way to make a donation is on Systems17.org with a credit card, but we can certainly facilitate donations by check, DAF transfers, or ACH donations. Email us at impact@systems17.com for instructions.

You may email impact@systems17.com with any updates to your nonprofit's organizational information. For any additional projects/programs you would like to see featured, please submit a form using the "Add project" button.

Systems 17 does not share donor information with nonprofits.
